16. The show is sponsored by the Home Builders Association of South Florida. But, although it will place a heavy accent on Florida-style living, it will actually be international in scope, according to John S. Gassaway, director. Last year, the show attracted more than 240,000 visitors.

This year, it's expected that the crowd will top the Quarter-million mark with ease, with delegation of businessmen-observers due from the Caribbean. There will be colorful displays of tropical fish in home-styled aquaria; hi-fi and stereophonic outfits that can transform a living room into a concert hall, and electronic marvels to make kitchen and other household chores seem like child's play. The variety of exhibits shows that South Florida is offering a greater number 1 of home-produced products, Gassaway said. There are sizeable reservations for exhibit space -from manufacturers in Hialfeah, North Dade, Coral Gables, South Dade and Ft. Lauderdale.

What happens when you're rockin along pretty well and all of a sudden, one day, you' hear the business has been sold out from under you? It can happen.

In fact, It's happening every day, with Increasing frequency, in this day of mergers. "No changes in personnel contemplated Most of the news releases contain that little statement tucked towards the end. But yon wonder about what really happens to the men and women in the firm of the second part. And in that connection an interesting comment crossed the desk this week end. It'a from Lon D.

Barton, a fellow who specializes In finding? Jobs for executives Barton's comment: While it is ominous if you happen to be one of the changes contemplated, the nation's largest executive placement outfit, feels there is a brighter side to the picure that is often overlooked. "Changes in ownership often give the alert executive a chance to prove himself, to show what he can do and advance with a new, aggressive management team," says Barton. It is a time of strain. The competent executive must protect himself. He must determine his own status as quickly and discreetly as "possible.

Once he has found that he is not in line for severance pay, the good executive should set about showing the new management just what he can do. Normally there is a grain of truth in those preliminary announcements. It is much easier to use existing manpower than it is to train new material and sound management is aware of this. So Barton thinks. The worst thing a man can do is to resign before he has been hurt.

"He immediately advertises his incompetence to any potential employer if he Quits before he has at least tried to work with the new management," Barton says. What are some of the best offensive and defensive steps an executive takes in merger situation? Barton suggests the executive should Inform himself as completely as possible on the background of the purchasing and surviving company. "Know how they operate and you will have gone a long way in determing your role in the company," Barton says. Contact other firms that have worked with the buying company. Word-of-mouth advertising can be very helpful in advancing your cause with new management.

Too often the harried executive starts running before he has made a study of the new company or tried to work with them. If you are declared surplus, all is still not lost. Barton has found that the enforced self evaluation that follows is often a very healthy thing for an aggressive executive; It will force him to determine his own potential, his failues and his strong points. The text books are full of examples of men who have gotten up from such temporary failures and gone to even greater success. Barton still favors a go-slow attitude through mergers: "Look before you leap.

Staying on in a merged corporation may offer a lot more opportunity than if you leap into a situation in which you are much less informed than your present job and have to start entirely fresh." The railroad and utility averages also declined until the latter part of the week when surprising strength was seen, especially in the rails. Reasons for the price rises in these two averages are easily discernible. Electric output across the nation increased more than 3 PC over the like week in 1957.

Mathers, manager of the company's store in Ft. Lauderdale. Mathers said yesterday that more than 30,000 items are included in the new volume. The Influence of today's space age is reflected in more than 50 space toys, including self propelled rockets that travel 200 feet into the air.

A bowling alley with auto matic pin-spotter, a build-it' yourself gasoline engine, glass-enclosed ant farms, and remote controlled airplanes are among the many new toys. Seventeen color pages of dolls of all sizes are shown this year while the influence of today's styles in homes is indicated by a split-level doll house. The old-fashioned nightgown, nightshirt and nightcap is back this time in styles for the whole family in brilliant red and white designs and stripes. For the youngsters, the catalog offers a line of pajamas and flannelette sleepers in the form of cats, kankaroos and rabbits Among the other new and unusual items in the Sears Christmas book are a man's jacket with a velcro automatic closure, and an assortment of gourmet foods that includes fried grasshoppers, boiled quail eggs, roasted caterpillar and smoked octopus. Across the nation, manufacturers are voicing a cautious optimism. Sales for the first nine months are mixed: monochrome tv Is off 20 per cent in unit sales, radio is just about running even, stereo is booming, and color tv is climbing slowly. Production curves began to turn up in August, and they are still going up.

Manufacturers, on the basis of this pickup, hope the fourth quarter will bring overall 1958 sales close to or equal to 1957's. The principal problem In slow sales during the first nine months of the year did not seem to be entirely one of price, the magazine says. Many a tv setmaker reports more sales in luxury lines than in the less expensive sets. Stereo systems, hardly cheap by anybody's standards, are the brightest spot in the entire consumer electronics industry. Every manufacturer noted that the Introduction of a new line brought fast consumer reaction in the form of cash in the till.

Trend in consumer taste is toward simplicity in design, and reliability in operation, the magazine says. "People nowadays feel that their purchases must have inherent value," a California manufacturer points out. "They're not shopping price alone." One distinct advantage of Cable Add. "ALCOAm" this past year, over the last two sales years, has been that no major manufacturer has gone out of business. Dumping of discontinued lines was one of the major causes of softness during 1956 and 1957.
