BE LIGHTLY was used up vying for command. FAIRS ana was getting to the winner at the finish. REGAL FOX saved ground while advancing on the far turn, but hung in the had to get up there with him. I knew if he went through there alone I'd be in trouble. "And if I went outside, I'd be four wide.

So I went with him and when we got there we both had to steady a little. I finally got through and tried to move on the winner out by then he had momentum." Solomone paused and then said, "I wish I'd forgotten about Riva and iust red horse. I might have wad better lirk Hold Your Peace tiieu to stay with the winrr but fell short by three-quarters oi a length. "I thought Hold Your Peace was the horse to beat," Hole said. "I rode against him last year and watched him run.

I knew he'd be good then and the three races he won thi3" year impressed me more. But I wouldn't throw either he or Riva out on the basis of today. The conditions were rough. I'd like to be on both of them." Money starting dropping back with the other three colts quickly moving into contention. "I knew I didn't have the speed to go with the horses in front so I just sat back to see what would happen," Hole said.

"When the front two starting backing up together, started my move." It was at this point that Ron Turcotte, riding Riva Ridae. found his colt in trouble. New Prospect, with John Rotz aboard, stayed tight in on the rail and Turcotte was trapped behind. "The race was run as expected with the two speed norses in front," Turcotte said. "I was down on the inside but I never could get through." Rider Mickey Solomone, on Hold Your Peace, helped keep Riva Ridge inside.

"I was mainly worried about Riva Ridge," he explained. "When he started to move I knew I "Riva Ridge and Hold Your Peace had to be concerned about each other," said winning rider Mike Hole. "Tbey were the two big horses in the race." Head Of The River was only the fifth choice in the six-horse field, a field cut by the early scratches of Idle Answer, scheduled to be coupled as an. entry with the winner, I Want You and the last-hour scratch of Upper Case, a sta-blemate of Riva Ridge. The winner paid $41, $8.40 and $8.40 across the board to those in the crowd of 16,629 actute enough to pick him.

Hold Your Peace, second choice on the board, returned $3.40 on a place ticket and $4.40 on a show ticket. New Prospect was the third choice on the board and paid $6.60 for third. The steady rains Friday night and all day yesterday turned the track into a sea of mud, a condition Head Of The fair was never a serious threat. River seemed to favor although he had never raced on an off-track before. The time was a relatively slow 1:49 4-5.

"I'd never seen this horse before and he'd never seen me," admitted Hole. "The man (Elliott Burch, Head of the River's trainer) told me he'd like the mud. He was bred by mud and for mud." Head Of The River was sired by Crewman out of First Feather, a First Landing mare. First Landing is also the sire of Riva Ridge. The early part of the race went as expected with Mrs.

Wallace Gilroy's New Prospect, the Hialeah track record holder at seven furlongs, and Nose For Money moving out early to duel for the lead. The winner sat back in fifth through the first three-quarters of a mile with Hold Your Peace fourth and Riva Ridge third. New Prospect, the pacesetter all the way around the track, gamely held on for third, a length in front of heavily favored Riva Ridge, The race had been billed as the "Run for the Rosebuds," supposedly a preview of next month's Kentucky Derby with Riva Ridge and Hold Your Peace the central figures in the pre-race drama. But it was Head Of The River, winner of just one race in six starts prior to yesterday, who took the curtain call in the winner's circle. 7 Furlongs.

MISTY FIELDS vied for command from Driver Horsa FintshI Timel Odds (Continued from Page ID) 10 lengths and managed to outduel Riva Ridge in the Everglades when the two were matching strides. "I wanted to get out of where I was," Turcotte said, "but Hold Your Peace kept me where I didn't want to be.

That wasn't my race being run out there." Perhaps not, but only five horses elected to battle both Riva Ridge and a horribly sloppy Everglades track, turned to liquid chocolate by almost 24 hours of steady rain. In the Derby, Riva Ridge must expect much more traffic, perhaps as many as 18 horses. It will be up to Turcotte to keep his horse out of trouble. The mud cannot be used as an excuse by either Hold Your Peace or Riva Ridge, although the winner can claim it as a bonus. "Head of the River loves slop," Burch said.

"I knew i yould move him up miles in this race." Riva Ridge, however, won the $75,000 Futurity in New York in the slop. Hold Your Peace won two allowance races over a sloppy course at Gulfstream. No one could complain about the mud. Lucien Laurin, Riva Ridge's trainer, said his horse would not run again until the Blue Grass Stakes at Keene-land two weeks before the Derby. The loss in the Everglades, upsetting because it mars an otherwise beautiful record, is not especially meaningful to Laurin.

He wanted Riva Ridge to get a mile and an eighth under his belt at this time of year in preparation for the Derby. Mission accomplished, even with the loss. The horse is being programmed for an assault on the Triple Crown. The winner of the Everglades does not go down in racing history- "Riva Ridge is still the best colt," Turcotte said. "Hell yes, he's still the best colt Horsa Driver PIUdValStfchiFinishl Timel Odds TOPI a forward factor rallied between horses in the stretch run and was up in the final stride.
