Inca Queen returned a healthy $19.40, $10.20 and $8.20 for the victory.

Kittiwake pari $5.80 and $4.40 with Alma North paying $4.60 for show. Although the handling is done by the younger Poole, credit for the strategy goes to the father. "This is the race we've had in mind all along," the senior Poole said. "This is the richest race for fillies and mares on the turf. With the race weighted the way it was I thought we had a good chance.

She worked a hell of a seven furlongs in Kentucky in 1:24 which is good for her." The veteran trainer knew his filly could run on the grass because she proved that at Belmont last fall with a pair of allowance wins on the turf. In two other grass starts Inca Queen has been second and third. Poole also liked the weight, P.P. Horse Wt. But in the far turn, first Inca Queen and then Kittiwake started to move, racing past tiring horses. The inside of the track got very crowded in a hurry as they straightened out, so Patterson took his filly wide. It was a good move as the winner raced down the stretch unhindered to the wire. He-liodoro Gustines, riding Kittiwake, did lodge a complaint against the winner for interference at the eighth pole but the stewards quickly disallowed it.

It wasn't much of a claim, as even Gustines admitted. "When the winner came around me she got in front and dropped in a little bit," he said. "I wasn't really bothered but it made my horse check." Patterson added, "If I bothered anybody I don't know where it was." Perhaps the biggest surprise was Grafitti, normally a strong stretch runner. She seemed to be in the right position at the top of the stretch but never made a real move." "My horse tired," was the simple explanation of rider Marco Castaneda. Poole was also a little surprised at the failure of Grafitti to get into the money.

"I figured the ten horse (Grafitti) was the horse to beat," he said. "But she didn't even fin-, ish in the money which shows what kind of a handicapper I am." In this case at least, it was a matter of like father, like son. The younger Poole, finally old enough to make a wager, admitted he hadn't bet on his own horse. Superstition was the culprit. But the win should make him a big man on campus.

"All week long his classmates have been asking him if his horse was ready, if they should bet on her," the father said. "I hope they did." a understandable opinion since the filly got in at 108 pounds. "There were other races for her here but she wasn't going to get in at 108 if she went in those," he said. In three previous starts at Hialeah, all on the dirt, Inca Queen ran second, seventh and eighth. The last two came in the Mimosa and the Black Helen and as Poole said, "Shs ran damn bad, I might add." The filly more than made up for it yesterday with a strong move coming off the far turn into the stretch.

"I told the jockey (Garth Patterson) that he should be laying somewhere in the middle of the pack and then when he was ready to move, to go with her," the elder Poole said. "I figured if she can't move with 108 pounds, we're in the wrong spot anyway." East Acres' Alma North jumped into the early lead as expected with Irish Party and Grafitti, favored on the board at S-2, laying third. Alma North, winner of the Black l'i miles; 3-vi FIFTH RACE maidens; claiming SECOND RACE 7 furlongs; 3-year-old $3,1100. fillies; claiming purse Inca Queen presented the young trainer-college student with a great present, a three length victory in the Columbiana Handicap at Hialeah Race Course. Poole, a senior at Biscayne College, handles the 4-year-old Hail to Reason filly for his father, George Poole, while he's not attending classes.

Yesterday it turned out to be a pretty lucrative part-time job. Inca Queen came charging from well off the pace into contention at the top of the stretch and won it going away, three lengths in front of Kittiwake. Alma North was a neck further back for third P.P.
