About IKE from Page and isolated cannot assure even its own security." He added the United States "must be joined by the capability and resolution of nations that have proved themselves dependable defenders of freedom." Eisenhower told Congress that isolation from such nations would invite war. He also emphasized that "our survival in today's world required modern, adequate, dependable military strength." Eisenhower's State of- the Union message today was much shorter than in other years, running only about 4.000 words. In line with a new pattern of providing details of the Administration's 1957 legislative program later, Eisenhower in this message listed only a few specific objectives. In the foreign field. Eisenhower said the United States is "willing to enter any reliable agreement which would reverse the trend toward ever more devastating nuclear weapons.

The President has said substantially that same thing on other occasions, but alwavs has coupled the assertion with the view that prospects of atta'ning such an agreement with Russia are not bright at this stage. He said today any such "reliable agreement" should "reciprocally provide against the possibility of surprise attack," and for mutual control "the outer space missile and satellite development." This was the first time Eisenhower has mentioned publicly international control against devastating missiles and satellite devices. In the disarmament field, Eisenhower also said the United States under "reliable agreement" would look forward to "a lower level of armament and armed forces and an easier burden of military expenditures." On the domestic front, Eisenhower did not discuss the possibility of any tax cuts. More About Montgomery from Page months ago, but he was out of town and no one was hurt then either. A three-foot section of wall by a door was blown out of the Hutchinson St.

Baptist Church in today's outbreak. The pastor, the Rev. H. H. Johnson, is another integration leader.

Gayle shrugged off suggestions. of calling in state or Federal law enforcement officers. "We don't need any additional help," he said. "We can handle the situation ourselves." A shotgun blast was fired into a city bus as it was finishing one of the first night runs last night since recent bus shootings brought a ban on after dark operations. It was the sixth armed attack on buses.

A young Negro expectant mother was shot in both legs in one attack. A three-foot section was reported blown out of a wall at the Hutchinson St. Baptist Church and windows across the street were knocked out. The pastor of the Negro church is another MIA leader. Abernathy's church, the Negro First Baptist, was damaged by a bomb that apparently went off against a door under the front steps.

More About Macmillan from Page Churchill.

ILLNESS DENIED called in Sir Winston Churchill and the Marquess of Salisbury, two of the ranking Conservative leaders. They probably recommended Macmillan over Butler. Macmillan moves up from his post as chancellor of the exchequer, the government's key financial post. He will have a free hand in picking the team he wants to run the government. Macmillan at 62 is three years older than Eden, who resigned last night with the explanation that his health prevented him from continuing to give his full loyalty to the job.

Eden had served 21. months, a comparatively short term for a British prime minister, in succession to Dec. 6, while Eden was in Kingston, Jamaica, his secretary denied a telephone interview with The Daily News that he had been ill. "The story of his: collapse is entirely without foundation," she said. insisting that the trip to the West Indies was only "for a There was no indication Macmillan would call a general election demanded by the opposition Labor Party-to seek a new popular mandate.

It seems unlikely the Conservatives will risk going to the country at a time of economic difficulties and with the people still divided over the Suez issue. Under the results of the 1955 election the Conservative mandate extends to May 26, 1960. Macmillan can serve that entire time if he wishes. The appointment touched off speculation that Macmillan will seek a quick meeting with President Eisenhower, probably in Washington, Macmillan also faces the job of strengthening commonwealth bonds, strained by Eden's Middle East policies. Finally, he must cope with an economic crisis heightened by the abortive British-French military intervention in Egypt and the closing of the Suez Canal, with its consequent loss of oil for Britain and western Europe.

Buses at Montgomery, were integrated under federal court order Dec. 21 after a day Negro bus boycott. A move to ride integrated on buses at Tallahassee, led to temporary suspension of bus service by the governor. Service resumed this week under a new bus seat assignment plan of the Tallahassee City Commission. In Montgomery, a move to integrate the buses led to 22 arrests.

Court action is pending. In Atlanta, the governor said he would not hesitate to use the state militia to preserve life and property. Griffin said he was instructing the adjutant general of Georgia to hold his forces ready to put down "any riots, insurrections and breaches of the peace" at a moment's notice. He pledged to call the troops in case of emergency "if local authorities do not cope with the serious situation this engendered." Southeastern Negro leaders plan to work out strategy for integated transportation in the South at meetings here today and tomorrow. The Atlanta desegregation move was led by Borders.

He and five other ministers boarded a bus in the downtown section and took seats in the front section. A transit system supervisor walked over and ordered the driver to let the bus "sit there." SANG, PRAYED All White passengers except one left the bus. Supervisor R. L. Wages called a crew of mechanics who tinkered briefly with the vehicle and then drove it off as the sang, prayed and read the Bible.

Borders said his group thought the bus was headed for a transit system parking lot and garage near the downtown section. "But it passed the garage and turned left on the boulevard and I don't know where it was going," he said. "We pulled the cord and got off about a block after it turned." No arrests were made. Mayor William B. Hartsfield declined comment on the governor's standby order to the militia.
