"I just always knew I wanted to be in the theater and aimed everything at that" says Ron of his growing-up days in Rockford, 111. rn I At Northwestern University, Ron majored in dramatics and steadily dated Patsy Peterson, a vocal student from Tulsa, Okla. Eager to get careers launched, he, Patsy and eight other seniors piled into two cars and sped to New York to get summer show jobs in 1959.

During his first week in a sical tent, a scout for a major talent agency signed him up. But Ron was already hunting a Broadway break for himself and Patsy. "I went along with her to an audition for girls for a musical," he says. "I hadn't been able to get to the male tryout previously, but I asked anyway whether I could sing. "The producers told me to come back a couple of hours later and I did just as they were leaving the theater.

But they stopped and told me to go ahead I did eight bars of "Some Enchanted Evening" and they said they would let me know."
