HA Fort Lauderdale News, Friday, January 12, 1973 She'll Play In Bamett Tennis Classic Julie Heidman Is No Robo-t SCREBARP NHL College Bos5crboll competing in an unsanctioned tournament British Motor Cars which is in (California next week. "No matter what happens, we are secure," Miss Heidman said. "If we don't play Wimbledon or Forest Hills, who cares? The hell 1(with them." Tickets for the Baraett Banks Classic can be 'purchased at any of the Barney Banks, Jordan Marsh or The Jockey Club. "I'm trying to be extremely careful about separating that," she said. "I want to play tennis in the morning and talk in the afternoon.

First I have to get my physical exercise out of the way. It all bugs me. But my tennis has been getting better." The newest thing going is a law suit filed by Heidman for the WITF against the USLTA to keep the latter group from "stealing our tournament," as Miss Heidman puts it. By the time me women of-the WITF arrive in Miami for their Bamett Banks Classic at The Jockey Club, Feb. 5-12, most of them will have been suspended by the ILTF for Miss Heidman seems quite sure of herself now.

She has the scars on her left knee to prove that she paid her dues. Since 1969, she has been less than Intimidating on the court. In that year she was ranked fifth in the world and "beat just about everyone." She won the Italian championship and was the Most Valuable Player on the Wightman Cup Since then, she has not had many victories worth mentioning. was going backward instead of forward in my tactics," she explained. "My enthusiasm is double at the mo-mept.

I'm quite secure and, for the first time ever, I'm starting the year healthy." Miss Heldman's problem for the past couple of years is that she has been a one-legged tennis player. "You have to put your weight on your left leg," she said. "For a year I couldn't do that. Now, even if I don't win all my matches, I know that they'll have to bt damn good to beat me. "Last year the girls used to say 'watch out, she might be good Now they'll have to say, 'watch it, she's really playing well One of the hindrances Miss Heidman has to playing her kind of tennis is the constant state of flux within the wo EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic Division 33 7 36 10 .12 30 4 40 Pet.

Knicks 122, Hawks 107 NIW YORK ATLANTA I I lit! I By RAY RECCHI Sports Staff Writer A lot of people in the tennis world do not seem to take Julie Heidman seriously because, of all things, her name. "In a way, I would rather be a strong person without the name Heidman," she said.

"In a lot of ways, it hurts with the group a little. They sometimes think I'm just spouting my mother's point of view. Sometimes I am. But if I am, it's because that's what I believe." Julie's mother is Gladys Heidman, organizer of the Women's International Tennis Federation, a group of women who have broken off from the ILTF to run their own tour. Mrs.

Heidman is also one of the most controversial figures in the game. This has caused Julie a bit of a problem. She is not by any means ashamed of her name or her mother. On the other hand, she is quite proud of both. But, because of the relationship, Julie must constantly comment on what is going on in the women's tennis- world and then be accused of being a robot.

"I don't really mind being out front," she said, "because if I want to lock the door, baby, I lock the door. "I'm just an aging, decrepit athlete with a big mouth who is going to have her best year in four years. You watch it, baby." "I don't have an accurate count, right but I do know that sales are slow and it's due mainly to this week's Super Bowl," Montgomery said, "Nobody's interested in golf right now it's all Dolphins until this Sunday." Montgomery was excited by the prospect of having the Inverrary Classic telecast to Japan via satellite, but was equally dismayed at the prospect of having a small local playing turnout for the pro-ams which precedes the tournament.

"We still have some openings, I hope we get more local people involved," Montgomery said.
