Japanese star Takashi Murakami and Fuzzy Zoeller were next at 207. Zoeller had a 70 while Murakami had to struggle to a 73, one-over-par in occasionally gusty Trade Winds. Tom Watson, a record-setting winner of his last two starts, shot a 66 and was tied at 208 with Al Geiberger and Andy Bean.

Bean and Geiberger each shot 69 on the oceanside layout that huddles under the shoulder of Diamond Head. "Five shots back probably would be too much," Watson said. "Four is possible." Ben Crenshaw, the defending champion, cut out a 67 and was at 209 but counted himself out of the title chase. "Just a little too far back," Gentle Ben said. Arnold Palmer rewarded his still-loyal army with a solid 66 matching the best round of the day but it may have been too little, too late.

He was still six strokes back at 210. A starry field of Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, J.C. Snead, PGA champ Dave Stockton, Billy Casper and Gene Littler all failed to qualify for the final two rounds. i aii HONOLULU Easy going old pro Don January, who once appeared poised to make a rout of it, had to birdie the final hole after the television cameras had ended their coverage for the day to retain a share of the third round lead yesterday in the $240,000 Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament. January had a two-stroke lead at one time, blew to a double bogey six on the 14th hole, then rallied with the two-putt birdie on the last hole to tie hard-hitting Bruce Lietzke for the top spot with matching scores of 204, 12-under-par on the Waialae Country Club course.

January, at 47 the oldest man in the field, had a 69 in the bright, sunny weather with temperatures in the lower 80s. Lietzke, a hardhitting 25-year-old who won the Tucson Open earlier this season and hasn't had a round over par this year, closed up with a 67. Lanny Wadkins, once one of the game's most promising young stars but mired in a deep slump since surgery more than two years ago, ripped out a six-under-par 66 and was within a single stroke of the lead at 205. Ot DUTY royal palrrv pomte OPEN MONDAY THRU FRIDAY 8 TO 5 41,930 Ford And Zakany A Team Again Scott "Beaver" Zakany will have one thing going for him when he caddies for ex-President Gerald Ford in the Inverrary pro-am 2'4 weeks from now. Zakany's brother Glenn caddied for Ford two years ago at Inverrary.

"He has given me a few tips," said Zakany. "He said Ford was a decent golfer. At least, that day, he was anyway. "And I'm not that much better than Glenn so I'll know pretty much what to hit on all the holes. He's an 18 handicap and I'm about an 11." Zakany, of course, got the idea to write to Ford from his brother who did so two years ago.

"I thought I might have an advantage because Glenn was his caddy the last time he played here," said Beaver. "Still, I was really surprised when I got the letter in January telling me I had been chosen. A lot of kids write to him. I really feel honored." Although Zakany does have the experience advantage, he has a couple of disadvantages, too. First, he lost his left leg when he was six years old and now has an artificial one.

"It shouldn't bother me as far as caddying goes," said the 17-year-old member of the South Plantation golf team. "I have to walk nine holes a day in golf practice carrying my own bag anyway." It did bother Zakany's swing for awhile but he's adjusted that, too. Zakany's other disadvantage is that, unlike other caddies, he's only seen the Inverrary course twice. "All I've seen of it is when I played a couple of matches there," he said. "So, I really don't know the course that well.

I imagine I'll know it after the round." Although Lancy Smith has the hot hand on the women's amateur golf tour, her performance last year wasn't good enough to get her a place in the Women's Amateur Rankings that came out last week in Golf Digest. Miss Smith missed the top ten for the first time since 1969 but a pair of names familiar to the Fort Lauderdale area were there. Both Tish Preuss (ranked eighth) and Cindy Hill (ninth) are on the list. Miss Smith's win at the Doherty and her second place finishes at Harder Hall and Hollywood should vault her back in the top ten next year. Kitty Miller, chairman of the Lago Mar Women's Golf Association, has a unique idea to inspire better play by the women.

She has started a "birdie So far it has been a big success. The tree was made by Jeff Thomas and sits in the women's locker room. Every time one of the ladies makes a birdie, a green leaf is placed on the tree with the golfer's name on it. There are currently 250 green leaves (and two gold ones for holes-in-one) on the tree and Carol Templin is the leader with 29. Dottie Binko is the Class leader with 10, and Pat Blackman leads Class with seven.

The contest, which began in April last year, ends in March. At Arrowhead, Hal Ordland and Mary Jane Paltani both scored holes-in-one. Ordland got his on the 140-yard second hole with a five iron while Mrs. Paltani aced the 145-yard 12th with a five wood. Margaret Goodrum won the Coral Ridge low net championship with a 66, nine shots ahead of Joyce Powers.

Louise Collins won the Flight with a 68, Etta Allen won Flight with a 72, Lona Leroy was the Flight winner with a 74, and Virginia Fonk took Flight with a 74. Rachel Yap won the Boca Teeca low gross title with a 88. Kay Groom was the low net winner with a 69, and Ruth Moser had the fewest putts for the tournament, 26. Marian Waxgiser was the winner at Broken Woods in the "Throw Out Three Holes" tournament. She had a 42 and Kay Mrachek was second with a 45.
