Mamie Eisenhower buried beside Ike in family chapel United Presl International ABILENE, Kan. The body of Mamie Doud Eisenhower, the Iowa-born wife of the 34th president of the United States, was flown to Kansas yesterday for burial in a small family chapel her warrior husband called "The Place of Meditation." The simple casket was flown from Andrews Air Force Base near Washington to Salina, then driven in a slow motorcade escorted by a military honor guard from nearby Fort Riley to Abilene, where the late president was born and buried. In keeping with Mrs.

Eisenhower's desire for simplicity and privacy, her funeral was restricted to family members and a few select friends, including former President Nixon and his wife, Pat, who flew in on the plane with the casket. The former First Lady's grave was alongside that of her husband and a toddler son "Icky" Doud Dwight Eisenhower in a family crypt located on the grounds of the Eisenhower Library. Mrs. Eisenhower died Thursday, two weeks short of her 83rd birthday. She had been hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington since suffering a stroke Sept.

25 at her home in Gettysburg, Pa. Mrs. Eisenhower disliked being in the spotlight throughout her long life. All through the White House years, she freely admitted she would have preferred the quiet life of the Eisenhower farm to the Washington fishbowl. "No one who has ever been in that terrible limelight would ever seek it again," she once said in an interview.

"She was a brilliant, charming and gracious lady," said longtime friend Henry Jameson, editor of the Abilene Reflector-Chronicle. "She was low key. She never tried to upstage or take the limelight away from Ike." Harry Darby, an industrialist and former Kansas senator, had been close friends with the Eisenhowers since World War I. The last time he saw Mrs. Eisenhower was in 1977 when she visited her husband's grave in Abilene for the last time.

"A lot of people in public life get to be a little repelled by crowds," Darby said. "She would walk right into them. Instead of walking away from a group, she would be a part of the group. "Everyone who knew her had a lot of affection and esteem for her," he said. "She was a very lovely First Lady of the land.

She loved people." Mrs. Eisenhower was born Nov. 14, 1896, in Boone, Iowa. Nineteen years later, while on a family trip to San Antonio, Texas, she met the young Eisenhower, then a second lieutenant stationed at Fort Sam Houston. For the next 45 years they were apart often, especially during Ike's days as supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe in World War II.

But her love for the man who later became the nation's first Republican president since the start of the Great Depression never faltered. In 1961 the Eisenhowers retired to the white brick farmhouse at Gettysburg, enjoying a quiet non-political life together until he died at Walter Reed in 1969 following a long battle with heart disease. Former president Richard Nixon and wife Pat pay respects. Eternal Light Memorial Gardens V. P.O.
