A 566-0466 FREE CONSULTATION 1.1 1 PROSECUTOR 1 LECTURER ON CRIMINSt APPf By Jennl Bergal Sun Writer DEERFIELD BEACH Al-though most of the fascinated onlookers couldn't come up and see her some time, they did get a chance to bid on the late Mae West's Jewelry and antiques Wednesday night. About 175 buyers, curiosity seekers, and fans showed up at an auction of part of the actresses' estate at the Deerfield Beach Auction Gallery. Miss West died in November 1960 at the age of 88. While most of the buyers who purchased the expensive pieces were dealers who wished to remain anonymous, many came to the auction just for fun. "I came out of curiosity.

Her life was kind of kooky, and I wanted to see how outlandish her jewelry was. Maybe she was really a nun at heart," said Jeanette Sudia of Somerset, N.J. But Miss West's reputation as one of the true Hollywood vamps remained intact as auctioneers explained that many of the pieces being sold were gifts from admirers. A dealer paid $1,900 for a personal gold compact engraved with "MW" in diamonds, and inscribed "To the Greatest Artist the World. Ever Knew.

From a Real Friend. Boris Petroff 1934." Petroff was a Hollywood producer. Miss West's collection also included an original bronze Remington statue titled "Coming Through the Rye," which sold for $15,000, and two Oriental ivory statues that sold for $1,750. never met Miss West, but they came from Boca Raton to see the late actress' collection anyway. "Once in awhile we get daring when we can afford something, but I don't think we can afford Miss West," Mrs. Hutchinson explained with a smile. Sherwin said the auction was the second time his gallery had sold part of Miss West's collection. He acquired the pieces through a bank and attorney representing the actress' estate.

Her jewelry was estimated to be worth $10 million and her antiques and rugs were valued at' an additional $2 million, according to auctioneer Louis Sherwin. Among the 10 pieces of jewelry to be auctioned was an emerald ring, purchased for $95,000 by a dealer, and an emerald and diamond bracelet weighing 14 carats, sold to another dealer for $22,000. While most of the audience came out of curiosity, Bernice and S. David Friedlander of Boca Raton at tended for another reason they had been introduced to Miss West more than 30 years ago. Friedlander recalled that they met the actress and W.C.

Fields at a party in a San Francisco hotel owned by Mrs. Friedlander's uncle. "She was a terrific actress, a real charming actress. When she would act, she would act sexually, but that voice was real put on," he said, adding that he and his wife came to see her jewelry. That realization combined with South Florida's increase in Japanese families led to formation of the Florida Committee for the Establishment of a Japanese Language School. If all goes as planned, Shiraishi said, the language school for children age 5 to 14 will hold its first Saturday session April 2 at Pine Crest Preparatory School in Fort Lauderdale.

Tuition has been set at $50 per month. In Broward County, where approximately 125 Japanese families reside, the school will enroll between 20 and 25 children, said Hollywood lawyer Ed Zwick, chairman of the committee and a specialist in international law. Zwick said he represents several foreign investors including Oki Electronics of America Inc. in Oakland Park, where some 25 transplanted Japanese engineers are employed for terms that range from two to five years. The number of Japanese in South Florida currently hovering around 500 is growing significantly as Japanese companies in- crease their international investment in money and manpower, said Bob Wood, a spokesman for FIU.

For at least the first year, said Shiraishi, the school will have two separate classes one for children of businessmen who plan to return to Japan, the other for Japanese-Americans who want their children to learn the native language. The school has the support of Gov. Bob Graham, who appointed the small, statewide committee to develop the program as a way of luring more Japanese industry to Florida. Similar schools are now operating in several states, including Georgia, which has held the Saturday classes for a decade and now boasts more than 100 Japanese firms with more than SI billion in investments, Zwick said. There is one other important future benefit, Shiraishi said.

The "many frictions" that now exist between Japan and the United States primarily in the area of competition for imports may be eased in the years to come as Japanese children exposed to both cultures become involved in foreign trade. "These children," he said, "are going to be an asset for both countries." i PRESIDENTAUTOMATIC RADIO 10 EximWVPhons I COUPON 5 40 CHANNEL REMOTE MOUNT CB z.
