6B Fort Lauderdale News, Wednesday. Aug. 28, 1985 troke fells Pembroke Park mayor unsnnv will HIIIT rnD LESS! HVBWVI WfcH AJso Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, Bedrooms, Buffets More! ByJoe Kollin Maff Writer Pembroke Park Mayor Dottie Johnston died early today after suffering a second stroke in less than a week. According to Vice Mayor J. Paige Caves and close friends, Mrs.

Johnston on Monday suffered a massive stroke and went into a coma. They said few other details are known and that they are respecting her family's wish for privacy. Last Tuesday, Mrs. Johnston, 65, suffered the first stroke, which left hlSr right side paralyzed. "The doctors had good hopes that she would be back soon after some thrapy," Caves said.

"We were kiiirj of like in hog heaven after than anyone had done for 25 years." Her accomplishments include the elimination of serious flooding problems that had plagued the eastern section of Pembroke Park for decades. It was the first major public works projects undertaken since the town was incorporated in 1957. The improving image of the town has been cited as a prime reason for the recent boom in office, industrial and apartment construction. "She's a bundle of energy," said the town's fire chief, George Van Etveldt. "She's fair, a terrific person and a positive thinker." Although she only had a high school education and no experience in politics, "she has more common sense than any political figure I can name," Phelps added.

Mrs. Johnston had been a waitress in South Florida for 42 years until she retired. In March 1983, she entered politics. hearing that news. I could hardly believe it when I heard about the second." One son, Robert, arrived from of Dallas to be at her bedside.

Another son, Jerry, was on his way from Cleveland, Ohio. Mrs. Johnston had been a waitress in South Florida for 42 years until she retired. In March 1983, she entered politics, ran for the Pembroke Park Town Commission and won. Four months later, her fellow commissioners selected her to serve as mayor.

Although the part-time job pays only 10 a month, she worked full time to achieve her often-stated goal of improving the town and its image for its 5,300 residents, most of whom live in mobile homes. "She's a ball of fire," said Sarah Phelps, a civic activist who had known Mrs. Johnston for more than 12 years. "In two years she has accomplished more in this town 1 4 TO vFsrssmssM i i Memorial service planned for crash victim By Michael Romano Slt Writer A Pompano Beach woman who died Aug. 2 in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 near Dallas will be remembered by scores of friends and relatives during a memorial service Sept.

"He's suddenly starting to improve, but it's been rough, very rough," she said of Wener's ordeal.

"We're hoping that he can be transferred soon to a hospital in Florida. But doctors say it will be three to six months before he'll be on his feet." Boyar said she expects several hundred people to attend the memorial service, including the victim's two daughters Mara Robinson of New York and Karen Danziger of Chicago. said.
