"He was an outgoing person," said Hortense Murray, his wife of 47 years. "He always liked to talk. That's the reason he went downtown." Mr. Murray, who died on Sunday, was born in Nassau and moved to Fort Lauderdale in his teens. He shined shoes for so many years that he became a downtown institution and one of the last practitioners of a dying craft, mixing his own polishes, applying the wax with his fingers to the shoes of thousands of customers.

His latest place of business was in the lobby of One River Plaza by the Andrews Avenue Bridge. Mr. Murray told a newspaper reporter recently that the secret of his longevity was keeping a clear mind. "Worryation that'll get you," he said. It was something he avoided.

He is survived by his wife and by four daughters Patricia Scruggs, Mary Ellen Smith, Leonora Flour-noy and Margaret Johnson. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Roy Mi-zell Funeral Home at 1305 NW Sixth Fort Lauderdale. The family will receive friends between 6 and 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
