He was 74.

Mr. Gibbs learned carpentry as a child, said his former wife, Jannie James of Fort Lauderdale. He grew up in Chapleton in the Mocho Mountains of central Jamaica and worked each day after school at a cabinetmaker's shop. In the early '40s, he immigrated to the United States. For the next five years he labored in the sugar cane fields near Belle Glade during the winters and on Northern vegetable farms in the summers.

In 1945, he met and married James, and went to work for a short time in Miami as a union carpenter. Soon after he decided to try it on his own. In 1951, he built his first home in Hallandale and a year later he received his general contractor's license from Broward County. "He was the first black general contractor in the county," said a son, Albert Gibbs of Lauderhill. "He was told that when he applied for his license" in 1952.
