MOTCHKAVITZ Brandon Dylan, 7, of Boca Raton, formerly of Coral Gables, passed away on September 7, 1992 at the West Boca Medical Center. He was the beloved son of Robert J. and Leslie McKerns Motchkavitz, and the dear brother of Holland Ryan Motchkavitz.

Brandon had suffered a near drowning accident on April 17, 1988. As a result of his undaunting determination and the loving care of parents, brother, family, nurses, doctors, therapists, teachers, and friends, he was in the process of making a remarkable and unprecedented recovery. Prior to suffering serious bone disorders, his rehabilitation program had enabled him to stand, with support, and make limited functional use of his handsarms. He also had been retrained to swallow and eat, but was unable to speak. Although recently wheelchair bound, he was in the process of learning to communicate with his eyes and hands through extensive rehabilitation and cognitive training.

Unfortunately the full extent of his recovery, as a reflection of the loving care he old. He didn't have pneumonia," said Sharon Ward, volunteer service specialist at Carl Hayden VA Medical Center. "The passing of our nation's oldest war veteran is more than just an historical footnote," Veterans Affairs Secretary Edward J. Derwinski said in Washington. "Nathan Cook's life spanned a period in which America grew from a nation just emerging on the world scene, to become the greatest power on Earth." Mr.

Cook had said Navy life was tough but that it beat living on a farm in his native Missouri. During his military career, Mr. Cook's shipmates nicknamed him "Northeast," derived by his shipmates from his first two initials. When Mr. Cook turned 104, President Bush sent him a congratulatory letter, and guests watched a video presentation of his life.

Mr. Cook's younger daughter, Eleanor Kay of Tempe, said on his 104th birthday: "He was a Navy man throughout. Navy. Navy. Navy.

He lived for the Navy. Yes, he had a wife and family, and he enjoyed coming home to see them. But he also enjoyed getting back to his ship." The Associated Press PHOENIX Nathan E. Cook, the oldest known American war veteran and last surviving veteran of the Spanish-American War era, died on Thursday. He was 106.

Mr. Cook joined the Navy in 1901 as a cabin boy. He was 15 but lied about his age to be able to join after seeing a recruiting poster promising an opportunity to "see the world." He saw action in the Philippine Insurrection, begun by Filipino insurgents unable to gain recognition of their independence from the United States. Spain had ceded the Philippines after losing the Spanish-American War of 1898. The insurgency began in 1899 and was crushed in May 1901.

During his 44-year career, Mr. Cook also saw action in the Boxer Rebellion in China, clashes on the U.S.-Mexican border and in both world wars. In World War Mr. Cook commanded a sub chaser that sank two German U-boats. And he decided to forgo retirement to fight in World War II, commanding a sea-going tug stationed at Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and a submarine tender at Panama.
