Findlay established the Chicago branch in 1932, and she was involved in the business there since the early 1940s. The galleries have served over the years as exclusive American representatives of such artists as Bernard Buffet and Dame Laura Knight. The Municipal Art League of Chicago cited Miss Findlay as "Woman of the Year" in 1959, and in 1980, Illinois Gov. James R. Thompson proclaimed Dec.

16 Helen Findlay Day in honor of her contributions to the arts and, as a fund-raiser, to charity. BROWARD COUNTY ARONSON Sue, formerly of Merrick, NY and Lauderhill, FL, died Friday, August 21, 1992. She is survived by Richard Aronson of Staff and wire reports Helen Findlay, a prominent figure in the arts in Chicago and director of the Wally Findlay Galleries there, died on Monday at her home on the Near North Side of Chicago. She was 83. Ms. Findlay, a native of Kansas City, and a Vassar graduate, was also treasurer of Wally Find-lay Galleries International, which specializes in contemporary French Impressionist artists but also features paintings by European and American impressionists and post-impressionists.

Its headquarters is in Chicago, and it has branches on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach and in Manhattan and Paris. The galleries, founded in Kansas City in 1870 by her grandfather, William Wadsworth Findlay, are among the oldest to remain in the families of the orig- inal owners.
