Sun-Sentinel, Wednesday, April 23, 1997 7B OBITUARIES Thomas Connor, helped gun down John Dillinger drawn and a submachine gun tucked under his coat, Mr. Connor was almost mistaken for Dillinger and shot by Chicago police. A few minutes later, Dillinger went down in a hail of bullets in front of the theater. Later, Mr. Connor participated in tracking down the likes of Pretty Boy Floyd, Ma Barker and her gang and Baby Face Nelson.

Mr. Connor left the FBI in 1935. He later practiced labor law and, during World War II, served in the Navy as an intelligence officer. After the war, he worked for 18 years for the CIA in New York. tion in 1932, he was invited by FBI Director J.

Edgar Hoover to join the bureau as an agent and be captain of the FBI baseball team. Under Mr. Connor's leadership, the team won the intergo-vernment championship that summer. As its captain, he received warm praise in a commendation letter from the FBI director. The letter cited Mr.

Connor's "physical prowess rare intelligence and indomitable courage" and saluted him for his "marvelous achievements of the past season." The next season, the FBI base ball team finished in second place and Mr. Connor was transferred to New York, Connecticut and Chicago. His son, Thomas L. Connor, said his father believed he was transferred for failing to win a second championship. The move to Chicago placed Mr.

Connor at the center of some of the FBI's best-known operations, and in 1934, he was assigned to the Dillinger squad, which was led by agents Sam Crowley and Melvin Purvis. At the time, Dillinger was the FBI's Public Enemy No. 1, sought for the commission of more than three dozen bank robberies staked out the Biograph with a detachment of Chicago police. The updated description of Dillinger, who was known to have altered his appearance with plastic surgery, said the outlaw was 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a medium build and a pronounced cleft chin. Mr.

He retired from the Sheraton Corporation as the Controller in 1968. Upon his retiring to S. Florida he was employed by Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton as the Controller for 11 years. At the age of 74 he decided to retire with his family. He was an active member of The Lyon's Club, Pompano Beach and St.

Paul's Episcopal Church, Delray Beach and he served as Past President of Texas Accountants Association. Mr. Johnson is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Norma A. Johnson, Delray Beach; son, Thomas A. Johnson of Houston, TX; daughter, Sally Ann (Peter) Antonelli of Delray Beach; sister, Vera (Donald) Dunham of Tucson, TX; grandson, Christopher Paul Pinzlno; and great grandson, Alexander Paul Pinzino.

York Times Alan R. Gruber, who took charge of Equity Funding Corp. after it collapsed in the 1970s in a big financial scandal and rebuilt it into Orion Capital a thriving insurance holding company, died on Friday, the company announced. He was 69. Mr.

Gruber, who was Orion's chairman and chief executive until he retired in January, felt ill last fall during a business meeting and soon learned that he had a brain tumor, according to John McCann, a friend of Mr. Gruber and a lawyer at Donovan Leisure. The cause of death was an inoperable brain tumor, which was diagnosed in July, his family said. Mr. Adams was an experienced diver who also served on the department's Rescue and Recovery Team. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, including Victoria Castaneda, who lived with Mrs. Cassell for many years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, April 25, 1997 at 12:00 PM at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach.
