Sun-Sentinel, Tuesday, March 18, 1997 7B OBITUABIgS Author Jurek Becker, Nazi camp survivor Gail Davis, 71, played Annie Oakley on TV Frederick Allen, 80, Pitney Bowes ex-chief Joseph McConnell, former head of NBC The Associated Press FRANKFURT, Germany Polish-born author Jurek Becker, who survived Nazi concentration camps to write Jakob, the Liar and other award-winning books in German, has died of cancer at age 59. Mr. Becker, a longtime resident of East Germany, moved to the West in 1977 after the former communist government banned publication of his work. He died Friday, according to the Suhrkamp-Verlag publishing house. Mr.

Becker was born Sept. 30, 1937, in Lodz, Poland, of Jewish heritage although he described himself as "deeply areligious." He grew up in the Warsaw ghetto set up by the Germans, and later was imprisoned in the Ravens-brueck and Sachsenhausen concentration camps. After the war, he went to school in East Berlin, where he learned German. He became a citizen of East Germany and member of the communist party and began work writing television scripts. Mr.

Becker's first and best-known novel, the 1969 book Jakob, the Liar, is a fictional work about a Jew in a ghetto in Poland who tries to boost the morale of his fellow sufferers by telling them fake war reports from a radio that does not exist. It was made into a movie in East Germany in 1974. Mr. Becker also wrote Bronstein's Children and scripts for German television and films. In 1976, he protested the exclusion of a fellow author from the East German writer's association, and shortly thereafter help initiate a protest letter over the expatriation of another writer.

Becker then was kicked out of the writer's club himself- Reuters LOS ANGELES Actress Gail Davis, who played Annie Oakley in the popular television series of the same name in the 1950s, has died at the age of 71, a hospital spokesman said on Monday. Ms. Davis, who was seen by millions in her role as the gun-toting, pig-tailed rancher, died of cancer on Saturday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Los Angeles. Annie Oakley ran on ABC from 1955 through 1958 and was seen on repeats well into the 1960s.

It was the first western to star a woman. The show was created for Ms. Davis by "singing cowboy" Gene Autry, with whom she had previously appeared in several westerns. After the series ended, Ms. Davis continued to make personal appearances with Autry.

She also appeared in TV specials, including Wide, Wide World: The Western, in 1958, a Bob Hope Special in 1959 and The Andy Griffith Show: The Perfect Female in 1961. Ms. Davis was born Betty Jeanne Grayson in Little Rock, on Oct. 5, 1925. She studied drama and dance at the University of Texas, where she met and married her first husband, fellow student Bob Davis.

They were divorced in 1952 following the birth of her daughter, Terrie. She later married Carl Guerriero, an auto dealer. He died in 1982. Ms. Davis is survived by her daughter, who lives in Texas.
