MS Sun-Sentinel, Sunday, September 7, 1997 11B OBITUARIES Mary Sears, oceanographer Memorial set for ex service editor World-renowned biologist, author of marine publications A memorial service will be on Monday for Robert "Bob" Freund, the former Fort Lauderdale News entertainment editor and theater critic, who died on Aug. 23 at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation House in Royal Palm Beach. uty clerk from 1973 to 1975. She was appointed an honorary trustee in 1976. Her other accomplishments include establishing and serving as chairwoman for the First International Congress on Oceanography at the United Nations in New York in 1959.

She also was a fellow of many U.S. and worldwide scientific groups, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was active in Falmouth, Mass. and Woods Hole activities, serving as a member of the Falmouth School Committee from 1952 to 1973 and as chairwoman from 1960 to 1969. She also was active in the Massachusetts Association of School Committees during the 1960s.

She leaves two sisters, Leila Sears of North Pomfret, and Elisabeth Laderoute of Princeton, N.J.; a brother, John Sears of Jamaica; a nephew, Edmund Sears of Wayland; a niece, Leslie Karpp of Wayland; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she held the Rask-Orsted Foundation Grant. While there, she received the Johannes Schmidt medal for her many contributions to marine research. The rest of her career was spent primarily at Woods Hole, here she was senior scientist in biology from 1963 until her retirement in 1970. Miss Sears founded and edited several publications that helped establish and document the fields of marine science and oceanography.

She was the author, co-author or editor of 11 publications and several compendiums of marine research from 1946 to 1980. In 1980, the magazine Deep-Sea Research dedicated an issue to her, saying that she had done the most of any woman to advance the study of oceanography. Miss Sears was also a longtime member of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she served as clerk of the corporation from 1947 to 1973 and dep Charles Rappaport, housing expert in N.Y. search assistant at Harvard from 1933 to 1949 and a regular instructor at Wellesley College from 1938 to 1943. In 1941, she went to Pisco Bay, Peru as a Grant and Faculty Fellow from Wellesley's Committee on Inter-American Cultural and Artistic Relations.

In 1942, Miss Sears returned to the United States and joined the war effort, being commissioned a Navy lieutenant junior grade in 1943. She was assigned to Naval Intelligence in Washington, where she organized and headed the Oceanographic Unit of the Navy Hydrographic Office. She served there until 1946. Miss Sears served in the Naval Reserves until 1963, retiring as a commander. She was active in the Association of Retired Naval Officers.

After the war, she spent a year The Boston Globe Mary Sears of Woods Hole, a world-renowned oceanographer, biologist and author of marine publications, died of congestive heart failure on Tuesday at her home. She was 92. Miss Sears was born and raised in Wayland, graduating from the Winsor School in Boston. She received her bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from Radcliffe College. During her graduate work and after graduation, she worked at Harvard University with Henry Bigelow, the founder and first director of the Woods Hole Oceano-graphic Institute, where she started working summers as a planktonologist.

Miss Sears worked at Woods Hole in various capacities from 1932 to 1941. She was also a re Hal Goodman, Emmy-winning writer worked with celebrities such as Milton Berle, Frank Sinatra, Steve Allen, Imogene Coca, Carol Burnett, Jackie Gleason and David Letterman. Survivors include his wife, Natalie; two daughters and a brother. He was born in Bethlehem, PA and attended Bethlehem High School and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. He was married to Mary R. Robinson, daughter of Dr.

James Robinson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. She died In 1984. He is survived by brother, Carl C. Konollge; and sister, Helen K. Broyles.
