"Cheyenne Autumn" was the film to talk about, but the effect on assembled newsmen in Cheyenne could have formed a movie to be titled, "How the Press Was Won by the West." Crystal clear blue skies, endless prairies tanned by autumn winds, lakes surrounded by trees turning red, gold and brown all aided the staff of Warner Bros, to promote the latest western by the old master, John Ford. Everything possible was done to make Easterners, Southerners and Northerners feel like bona fide cowboys. Magically, sheepskin coats, Stetsons, levis and boots made their appearance, attached WHAT A WOMAN IIIMlffffllllffl i i mii in ii 'IIBB I mi I o- lil U.S. between Pompsno Deerfield somewhat embarrassingly (at first) to the frames of the Fourth Estate. After the picture's stars arrived at Ft.

Laramie for barbecue and Indian dances, interviews were set up in the ruins of an officer's barracks on the ancient parade ground. I MAUbhAlvl States, Japan, Canada, France and Britain invaded Cheyenne last weekend, and it isn't an easy task to secure interesting interviews on such a massive junket. SEPARATE INTERVIEWS But as we sat in the roofless, windowless barracks, the stars entered one by one, giving the assembled newsmen as much time as they wished to ask questions. Burly Mike Mazurki, the 6 ft.

4'a 240-pound wrestler turned actor, was the first to be interviewed. Mike's not a star, but one of the most reliable character actors in the business. He's made more than 125 films. Mike's 53 years old, has had every bone broken in his body, and been blind three times. Yet, he wrestled just last year in an exhibition bout.

Would he like to play a lover on screen? "Sure," growled Mike, "but look at this face." RUSSIAN COOLIE He began in films when Joseph Von Sternberg was searching for a hulking type to portray a Russian coolie in "The Shangai Gesture." Did he believe in women wrestling? "Absolutely." he replied. "I'd love to wrestle one." His favorite role was in "Murder, My Sweet," and his ambition is to fill the late Victor McGlaglen's place. Patrick Wayne presented a modest, unassuming personality to the press. Handsome, slightly resembling father John Wayne, Pat is the first to admit it's nice to have a famous father. What does he think of John Ford as a director? Wayne laughed when he answered: "Well, he's my display, not to mention the gold-leafed transparent blouse she wore with her gold lame riding pants.

"Cheyenne Autumn" will open a reserved-seat engagement in Miami Beach after the first of the year. 'Secret Invasion' Is Exeitinii Film i IN COLOR There were branding exhibitions, calf-roping, calf-riding, and demonstrations where horses cut and returned calves to the herd. Herds of antelope and buffalo grazed about. In Cheyenne later we viewed the parade which celebrated both the film and the dedication of the actual Cheyenne Autumn Trail, highlight-i American Landmarks Week. All the stars participated, with Carroll Baker gathering the most attention by virtue of her equestrienne U.S.

"In a word," said Pat, "it's a help, but you've got to work it out on your own in this business after the doors are opened for you." INDIAN CEREMONY After this session, we crossed the prairie to an Indian village camp site. A huge barbecue preceded the ceremonies which made Cheyenne tribesmen of James Stewart and Carroll Baker. A golden light in the west silhouetted the foothills around the camp, and a roaring bonfire was started.

Where else could a columnist from the tropics participate in a war dance, hoofing it between Chief John Woodenlegs, president of the Northern Chey-ennes and a bearded, mon-ocled correspondent from London? Appetites were stimulated by the pure, crisp air the next morning, and after ranch-style breakfasts, newsmen were chauffeured to the Hyde Mer-ritt Ranch and the Wyoming Hereford Ranch, a small pad 96 square miles in size.
