Renowned Poet Dies In Canada TORONTO. (P) Wilson MacDonald, considered by some to be one of Canada's greatest poets, died of a heart attack Saturday in a Toronto Hospital. He was 86. In recent years he had lived in suburban Willowdale, supported by earnings from books and readings he gave. The New York Times book review once said: "In the present generation of poets whose name is legion, Wilson MacDonald is the outstanding figure." The late Prof.

William Lyon Phelps of Yale University said: 44Tf Wilson MacDonald had written the same poetry that written in Canada in the United States or England, his name would be known around the world." He had written and published many volumes but received little financial benefit. "It's been hell, just hell," he told an interviewer on his 85th birthday. "Fighting with the schools, fighting with critics, fighting with everybody." He was one of the few western writers paid royalties by the Soviet Union. He visited there in 1957.
