Teachers Fail As Firemen So Flames Destroy School PENSACOLA. (P) Fire that gained headway' as teachers tried for 25 minutes to fight it with makeshift equipment destroyed Pensacola Technical High School yesterday. "They tried to put this thing out before they called assistant Fire Chief Robert Herron said. "They had a garden hose and a fire extinguisher. They just let it get away from them.

They had a bigger fire than what they had material to fight it with." Herron said he didn't know if the 47-year-old, four-story school could have been saved had the alarm been turned in earlier. About 500 students were evacuated from the building, but Herron said "quite a few" ran back inside to open windows that firemen had been closing. "We finally got police to run them out of there," Herron said. Charles W. Stokes discovered the blaze around 1 p.m.
