The St.

Bonaventure pivotman snared 19 of his team's 53 rebounds against North Carolina State, which got only 38 in losing, 80-6fi, in an opening round game Thursday night. Unranked Villanova came up with 61 rebounds in crushing 17th-rankcd Niagara, 98-73, in the other opener. Niagara and its pint-sized All-America, Calvin Murphy, managed only 39 rebounds against the taller Philadelphians. Today, in Columbus, Ohio, Villanova scoring star Howard Porter, 6-foot-8, center Sammy Sims and forward Clarence Smith, each 6-foot-5, will have the job of trying to stop the 6-foot-ll, 275-pound Lanier. Lanier Co.

was able to cut off 10th- ranked N.C. State's inside game. However, Villanova showed in the Niagara game that it doesn't need an inside game. Porter bombed away all evening for a nifty 29 points, nearly all from outside. He also took in 18 rebounds, while Smith had 12 and Sims 14.

Lanier scored 24 points against N.C. State and was aided by Matt Gantt and Greg Gary, who had 11 each. Lanier will get outside scoring aid from St. Bonaventure's 5-foot-10 backcourt ace, Bill Kalbough. who showed remarkable accuracy with long shots in racking up 13 points in the Thursday game.

Niagara will find itself in the same trouble against N.C. State in the noon (EST) consolation opener today that it had against Villanova not enough height. Villanova may find itself with a similar height problem because of the board-dominating Lanier during the 2 p.m. final. The winner goes to the national semifinals and finals at Maryland next week.

LOUIS. (UPI) Pete Maravieh was "the runaway choice as the college player of the year," in balloting by general managers of the nation's professional basketball teams, the Sporting News announced Friday. The Louisiana State University scoring machine headed the 1969-70 All-America team named by the sports weekly. Bob Lanier of St. Bonaventure was runnerup in the balloting.

Rounding out the starting lineup were Rudy Tomjanovich of Michigan, Dan Issel of Kentucky and Charlie Scott of North Carolina. All are seniors. Adolph Rupp of Kentucky was named the college Coach of the Year. Purdue's Rick Mount, a 19G8-69 choice for the top five, headed the second team this year. He was joined by seven others on the second unit.

Receiving top votes were Dave Cowens of Florida State, Artis Gilmore of Jacksonville and Calvin Murphy of Niagara. Yunkus hit three 'straight baskets to pull Tech, ahead, 64-54, with 5:30 remaining and the Dukes were never able to come closer than four points, 72-68, with two minutes left. Mexico State's inside power, and whether the Bulldogs' speed and aggressiveness can upset the Aggies' style of play as Kansas State did. "Both of them will have to use their strength," said Cotton Fitzsimmons, coach of Kansas State.
