FLORIDA SUN-SENTINEL OBITUARIES PB SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2003 78 Laurence A. Tisch, 80, financier BY JONATHAN KANDELL THE NEW YORK TIMES Laurence A. Tisch, the selfmade New York billionaire who was hailed as a white knight for saving CBS from a hostile takeover and then reviled for gutting what was once the nation's premier broadcasting network, died early Saturday at Tisch Hospital of the New York University Medical Center. He was 80 years old. The cause of his death was complications from gastric cancer, said his wife, Wilma Stein, who is known as Billie.

For much of his career, Mr. was known as a brilliant, contrarian investor who bought failing companies when their share prices were at low ebb and then turned them into profitable enterprises with so much higher stock valuations. and his brother, Preston Robert they were better as Larry and Bob built up and controlled the Loews a conglomerate of hotels, insurance, cigarette manufacturers, movie theaters, Oil tankers and watchmaking PALM BEACH COUNTY Chadwick Chadwick, Billy Eugene A Mass Offering. With the sympathy of Pio Roda. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for the repose of the soul of his beloved friend Billy "Bill" Eugene Chadwick.

Date: 11- 20-2003 Time: 8:30 a.m. St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, 10300 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, FL. The Heaven Above and the Law Within. A Psalm of David.

(Psalm 19) The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament show his handywork. Day unto day uttered speech, and night unto night show knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiced as a strong man to run a race.

His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid form the heat thereof. The Law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgements of the LORD are true righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? cleanse throw me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominium over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight. LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

At that point, Mr. Tisch had a sterling reputation not only for his Midas touch, but also as a man who disdained the glitz and arrogance that so many other magnates embraced in the 1980s. lanthropist. He was known as a political centrist who was the host of breakfasts for opposites like Rep. Charles Rangel, a liberal Democrat from Harlem, and the Rev. Pat Robertson, a television evangelist and conservative Republican from Virginia. All these credentials made Mr.

Tisch the consensus candidate in 1986 to rescue CBS from an assortment of corporate raiders and from conservative politicians, led by Sen. Jesse Helms, who accused the network of a liberal bias. Through Loews, Mr. Tisch bought a strong minority stake in CBS and was invited to join its board. Within months, he was elevated to acting chairman and chief executive.

"My only desire is to keep CBS as a first-class, independent network," he told The Times Magazine. "It's very important for the country." But Mr. Tisch was soon blamed for selling off some of CBS's most valuable assets, failing to develop top-rated programs, dismissing too many employees and leaving She was predeceased by husband Joseph, daughter Kim Garon and her parents. He was born in Jersey City, NJ, a resident of Stuart for five years, coming from Tamarac, FL. He was a former member of the St. Vincent's Cadets Bayonne, NJ, and the company far behind its main competitors in terms of audience and advertising revenues. Mr. Tisch defended his 10-year leadership of CBS by noting that its sale in 1995 to the Westinghouse Electric Corp.

brought a windfall of profits to shareholders, including Loews, his family-controlled company, which ended up $1 billion richer. In the years after the sale of CBS, Mr. Tisch became increasingly involved in philanthropic efforts, especially on behalf of his alma mater, NYU. He helped raise almost $2 billion for the university, including more than $40 million from his family's donations. But his sure financial instincts seemed to have abandoned him.

Between 1996 and 2000, he lost about $2 billion of Loews' capital by betting heavily against the stock market. Despite being a billionaire, Mr. Tisch continued his restrained lifestyle. "Your standard of living doesn't change after the first million," he once said. "I don't want to become possessed by my possessions." Archer-Epler Musketeers in Upper Darby, PA.
