Crisis teams of psychologists, counselors and social workers are now at Dillard. I IS! LOU TOMAN, SUN SENTINEL Teah Wimberly, 15, sits in Judge Elijah Williams' courtroom on Thursday, charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon on school property. Williams ordered Wimberly held for 21 days and to undergo a psychological evaluation.

The judge set Dec. 2 for her next court date. District looking into whether Dillard shooting was avoidable By Kathy Bushouse, Tonya Alanez and Mike Clary STAFF WRITERS FORT LAUDERDALE Broward School District officials are investigating whether a student told a Dillard High School teacher or staff member that Teah Wimberly had a handgun before she used it to fatally shoot a friend and classmate in a school hallway, Superintendent James Notter said Thursday. The district was looking into tips that Wimberly, 15, showed the gun to another student on Wednesday before shooting Amanda Collette, said Joe Melita, executive director of the district's special investigative unit. He said investigators also are looking into whether a teacher or staff member knew Wimberly had a gun but did not alert authorities.

As counselors arrived Thursday at Dillard to soothe a shaken student body, longtime friends and classmates of the two girls said the shooting was not sparked by a feud, but by Wimberly's yearning for friendship especially her intense feelings for Collette, also 15, whom she had known since elementary school. "Everybody needs somebody to talk to, somebody to hang around with, and that's all Teah wanted," said Iyanna Shorter, 15. "She wanted somebody to love. Everybody needs somebody like that and Teah didn't have that." Wimberly was deeply affected when her father was imprisoned last year on an attempted murder charge, according to her grandparents. Her mother lives in another i' cal evaluation.

The judge set Dec. 2 for her next court date. According to a probable cause affidavit, Wimberly said she and Collette had been very close, but recently had stopped talking. Upset, Wimberly decided to take the firearm to school should she encounter Collette, the report said. According tq police, when they met, Collette refused to speak and turned to walk away.

Wimberly drew the small-caliber handgun and shot her one time, police said. Wimberly fled to a nearby restaurant and called 911. Crisis teams of psychologists, counselors and social workers would stay at Dillard as long as necessary, officials said. Staff Writers Sofia Santana, Jon Burstein, John Holland and Staff Researchers Gail Bulfin and Barbara Hijek contributed to this report. tered but a single word twice during a brief appearance before Judge Elijah Williams.

"Yes," she said when the judge asked her if she understood that she was not to have any weapons. "Yes," she whispered again in acknowledging that she was not to make any contact with Col-lette's family. Charged with first-degree murder and, discharging a weapon on school property, Wimber-, ly is likely to be tried as an adult, prosecutors said. Williams ordered Wimberly held for 2 1 days and to undergo a psychologi state. Detectives declined to discuss the nature of the two girls' relationship, saying much remained unclear.

Several students who knew them well, including freshman Monique Higgins, 15, said Wimberly wanted a romantic relationship with Collette. Wimberly had told Collette, "I'm going to hurt you the way you hurt me," said Higgins, who has known Collette and Wimberly since elementary school. After the shooting, Wimberly told police, "I wanted her to feel pain like me," according to a police document. Wimberly made her first court appearance Thursday, looking longingly at her grandfather in a Broward County courtroom as she was led back to the lockup.
