Scott Caddies for President Ford - Golf Ijpi) Pat Dooley Ford And Zakany A Team...
Golf Ijpi) Pat Dooley Ford And Zakany A Team Again Scott "Beaver" Zakany will have one thing going for him when he caddies for ex-President Gerald Ford in the Inverrary pro-am 2'4 weeks from now. Zakany's brother Glenn caddied for Ford two years ago at Inverrary. "He has given me a few tips," said Zakany. "He said Ford was a decent golfer. At least, that day, he was anyway. "And I'm not that much better than Glenn so I'll know pretty much what to hit on all the holes. He's an 18 handicap and I'm about an 11." Zakany, of course, got the idea to write to Ford from his brother who did so two years ago. "I thought I might have an advantage because Glenn was his caddy the last time he played here," said Beaver. "Still, I was really surprised when I got the letter in January telling me I had been chosen. A lot of kids write to him. I really feel honored." Although Zakany does have the experience advantage, he has a couple of disadvantages, too. First, he lost his left leg when he was six years old and now has an artificial one. "It shouldn't bother me as far as caddying goes," said the 17-year-old member of the South Plantation golf team. "I have to walk nine holes a day in golf practice carrying my own bag anyway." It did bother Zakany's swing for awhile but he's adjusted that, too. Zakany's other disadvantage is that, unlike other caddies, he's only seen the Inverrary course twice. "All I've seen of it is when I played a couple of matches there," he said. "So, I really don't know the course that well. I imagine I'll know it after the round." Although Lancy Smith has the hot hand on the women's amateur golf tour, her performance last year wasn't good enough to get her a place in the Women's Amateur Rankings that came out last week in Golf Digest. Miss Smith missed the top ten for the first time since 1969 but a pair of names familiar to the Fort Lauderdale area were there. Both Tish Preuss (ranked eighth) and Cindy Hill (ninth) are on the list. Miss Smith's win at the Doherty and her second place finishes at Harder Hall and Hollywood should vault her back in the top ten next year. of at
